February 25, 2008

Dear Parents and Students,

I am delighted to inform you that once again some of my colleagues and I are sponsoring Barrington High School's eighteenth annual autumn Shakespeare Festival Field Trip to Stratford, Ontario, Canada for all  interested high school and eighth grade students who will be attending Barrington High School in September, 2008.  The  trip will leave the evening of Thursday, September 18 and return Sunday morning, September 21, 2008.

This year our three choices for Shakespeare are the following: Romeo and Juliet , Aeschylus' Greek tragedy The Trojan Women, and two Broadway musicals, The Music Man and Cabaret. Student sign up starts right away.

The cost of the trip is $550.00.  This price reflects a minimum participation of 26 students. If we do not have at least 26 by the end of the school year, we will either have to add to the price or cancel and return deposits.   In order to reserve a place, an initial $200.00 deposit or full payment, if you wish, is due now and the balance (non refundable) is due by April 20, 2008.  Please make checks out to Barrington High School and write Stratford on the memo line.  This price includes round trip bus coach fare, tickets,   theatre/archive tour, two dinner banquets, and accommodations.  I strongly urge you to act quickly to reserve your place(s).     I will accept reservation checks on a first come first serve basis.   Contact me (Chris Deignan), any teacher in the English Department, or Mr. Jon Lynn in Performing Arts for reservations and information. One student eligible for free/reduced lunch may apply for financial assistance for this trip and should contact the associate principal for school improvement  and staff development.

The Stratford Festival Theatre is the premier theatre for Shakespearean drama in North America and therefore offers students and teachers an excellent opportunity to experience superb performances on a Shakespearean stage. This is also a wonderful opportunity for students to connect into a mainstay of our English Department curriculum at all levels. Students who took this trip before have told me they truly valued this educational experience.  Some have returned as many as three more times.  I recommend your son's or daughter's attendance and seek your support.  Our first seventeen trips were tremendous educational successes, and I look forward to a wonderful trip once again.

At the end of this page are the  information on accommodations and commitment/permission forms for students who have submitted their reservation checks to any of the English Department teachers or directly to Mr. Deignan, Mr. Nicholus, or Mr. Lynn..   If you wish to contact me, I would be happy to speak with you.  Please call 847-842-3200 voice mail box 5076. You also may reach me by email at cdeignan@cusd220.org.

Very sincerely,

Chris Deignan, English Department

Field Trip

To The Shakespearean Festival

Stratford, Ontario Canada

Sept. 18 -Sept. 21, 2008

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

1)  To have students experience live performances of Shakespearean plays at the premier Shakespearean theatre in North America and bring valuable learning experiences back to the classroom(where Shakespeare is taught throughout the curriculum) to enrich themselves, their classmates, and their teachers.

2)  To have students understand the cultural importance of the Stratford Shakespearean Theatre and the educational opportunities available in Stratford, Ontario itself such as courses, lectures, workshops, guest speakers, etc.  The opportunity to represent America abroad and to  experience  the  perceptions of the United States and of artistic merit of non-Americans is itself a broadening experience.

3)  To compare and contrast students' understanding and interpretation of  live plays vs. plays experienced from audio tapes/CD's, video tapes, DVD's, or reading.

4)  To have students keep a reflective journal on their theater experience and, with their teacher's approval, have them submit selected selections for extra credit course work.

5)  To compare the characterization of various roles by the same professional actor working in repertory, including Greek, Shakespearean, Restoration,  Shavian, and great American drama,  and a corps  of classically-trained artists who work  in Europe, in film, and on Broadway.

6) To have  theater students tour the  backstage, scenic production and costume facilities of the Stratford Festival to  enhance their  understanding of  career and artistic opportunities in the industry.
